Deacon by Kristen Ashley @KristenAshley68 (ARC Review)

ARC received from author in exchange for an honest review
5 Beautiful War Stars

Excitement flowed through me. With kindle in hand, eyes fixated on its screen, the world around me faded away. All that existed resides in cabin 11 – Glacier Lily Cottages - Antler, Colorado.  Captivated and consumed by Deacon and Cassidy’s love story, I was once again lured into a fantastical world created by one of my favorite authors, Kristen Ashley. As expected, I was treated to a wondrous, emotional tale filled with laughter, heartache, and amazing erotic scenes, which surpassed any previously penned by this author. Deacon is a must read for fans and lovers of romance.

Deacon is the fourth installment in the “Unfinished Heroes” Series  - stories about ‘anti-heroes’  - decent men whose life experiences forced them to do undesirable deeds. Deacon, aka John Priest as he is first introduced to Cassidy, is one of those men. Heart-shattering events from his past led him down a dark and dangerous path to become a “dead man walking”.

This erotic romance is by far one of the hottest, sexiest books I’ve read. The sex, which included BDSM elements, was deliciously arousing.  Cassie and Deacon know how to get their kink on and their “vanilla” lovemaking was just as sizzling.  Ashley has out done herself, making this read one of my all time favorites. It had it all…a well written plot, drama, suspense, passion and breath-taking moments. Her detailed and descriptive writing, as well as the dialogue, gives great insight into the hearts and minds of the characters.

Cassie is the owner of Glacier Lily Cottages, cabins set in the mountains of Colorado. Her first customer is a gorgeous, terrifyingly scary man who calls himself “John Priest”. From the moment they met, Cassie was drawn to him by simply glancing into his expressionless eyes. And so begins a quasi-relationship spanning over six years as Deacon finds himself returning to what he considers homecabin 11. All the while, a war was raged within the mysterious Deacon Gates. A battle between his will to remain a broken, emotionally detached man and the growing need to submit to his burning desires for Cassie.

I fell head over heals in love with Deacon. Tall, handsome, rugged, outrageously sensual and a growler – everything I desire in the Alpha hero of my dreams. Each time he rumbles “WOMAN”, “HERE” to Cassie, I tingled with girlish excitement.  The complexity of his character was fascinating.  A total badass who voiced so few words but whose actions and expressions spoke volumes. His transition from a stoic, soulless man to a caring and passionate lover overwhelmed me.

Buried beneath his ‘wall of ice’ lived a true romantic hero. The more Deacon shed his secrets, the more I connected with his character.  Tough and tender, serious and sweet, commanding and compassionate – all that makes Deacon the powerful man who wormed his way into Cassie’s heart, managed to capture mine.

Cassidy Swallow is “the shit”. One of the strongest storybook heroines I’ve come across. She’s funny and sassy (in a non annoying way). Her determination to be both an independent woman and to break through to Deacon was immeasurable. She’s the perfect “tough broad” to challenge a man like Deacon. I admired her tenacity and the way she gave all of herself to help heal his pain. Cassie is without a doubt the woman Deacon needed to help conquer his demons, let go of an ugly past and fight a “beautiful war”.

For fans, Deacon is a must read. It contains some sexual situations mentioned in the disclaimer, but honestly, I personally had no trouble with it. There is no cliffhanger, but a foundation is set for the last installment. It can be read as a stand-alone. However, I highly recommend reading Knight, Creed and Raid to fully appreciate the journey and the characters involved in the storyline. One of the highlights of diving into a new release is discovering which old friends make cameo appearances. Another reason why I love KA’s books, the perpetuity she gives all of her characters. You really never say a final goodbye. My only gripe (if you can even consider it one) is that I found myself wanting more of Cassie and Deacon’s romance. I am a greedy reader when it comes to Kristen’s work. Her stories exist on a different plane for me, and the power of her tales touches me in unspeakable ways.  Seeing the word “epilogue” fills me with dread knowing I have to wait to get my next fix.

Conquered (She Who Dares #2) by LP Lovell @Authorlplovell

Arc provided by author in exchange for an honest review

…And the drama continues…

The ending of Besieged left our two lovebirds broken hearted and miserable. Poor Lilly had the weight of the world on her shoulders. The man she loves shattered her heart, creating more upheaval in her already hectic life. Theo is ripped to shreds, suffering from the consequences of his incredibly stupid blunder, determined to right his wrongs. Both are in shambles and hopeless. With that in mind, I knew to buckle up for an emotional roller-coaster ride. Conquered, the second installment in the She who Dares series, did not disappoint.
Throughout most of Conquered, there was a huge ‘push’ and ‘pull’ situation. A desperate Theo is fighting an uphill battle by seeking forgiveness and pushing his way back into Lilly’s life. The more he pushes, the further she pulls away and retreats. Theo’s sadness tugged on my heartstrings, and I found myself routing for his cause. Lost and forlorn, I truly felt bad for him…until he majorly ticked me off – TWICE. (GASP)!!

Theo’s just as dashing and extremely sexy in this read, and I adored him. His transformation, triggered by falling in love, touched me, as did his heartache. But, drunken public restroom mistakes and Theo seem to go hand in hand. He disappointed me. And a bit of the old insensitive, callous side of Theo crept back in when dealing with psycho chick, Cassie (YIKES)!  Yes, the predicament with Cassie turned his life upside down, but Theo could have handled the situation with more understanding. Although I love Theo’s character, these two situations slightly skewed my admiration for him. I am hoping in book three, Theo resolves these issues and redeems himself to become the honorable, strong man Lilly needs. That aside, my heart does go out to him for all of his woes.

There are dubious people affecting Lilly’s life, and I truly feel sorry for her. Despite all that’s going on, Lilly remains as stubborn as ever. I got to give her credit; she’s a tough chick who stands her ground. I admire her grit, however, I wanted to scream ‘enough already and give in’. Theo’s arms were wide open, waiting to catch her. Lilly’s constant refusal was teeny bit vexing. She has gumption and puts up a good fight, but I wanted to see her heal and embrace the one who holds the key to her strength ~ Theo.
Along the way, Theo and Lilly manage to pull off some steamy and passionate times in the midst of their turmoil.  It was during their affectionate moments I was reminded how erotic they can be. Theo is at his best when showering Lilly with tenderness and love.

All in all, this was a great read for me. I liked that the story was presented in dual points of view – a peek into the minds of these off the wall characters. LP Lovell is an incredibly gifted author whose unique writing style evoked a vast array of emotions within me. The story line, filled with moments of angst, nail-biting tension, hot sex and romance, grabbed and held my attention from beginning to end. Lastly, be warned there is a cliffhanger. LP leaves us dangling, anxious to see what the future has in store for our tumultuous couple.

Excerpt
“You’re smiling rather devilishly at me Sir,” Samantha whispered. “Am I?” he answered back waiting to see her response. “Yes I can just imagine what’s going through your mind with tonight looming before us.” Her smile was slightly crooked but very sexy. He was enjoying their little repartee. “What’s going through my mind Samantha is seeing you knelt down before me with your lips around the shaft of my cock.” He watched her blush and was amused that she could be embarrassed so quickly. Or was that heat that flushed her cheeks. “Sir, you’re getting me wet.”

I've been writing since I was a kid. I love creating and tried my hand at art, not bad but not good enough. A guy's gotta eat. Through high school I wrote erotic stories, kept them in a notebook, let a few of my girlfriends read them. Yeah, played football, baseball, but my brain never stopped thinking of sex. I guess we think about it all the time. Been on face book for a while never did anything interesting when I was on until I started to see all the writers and then some poets posting their erotic prose. Men who were writing erotic romance and stories, I knew it was my time to get out the old note book and throw on some poems. Some are old and some are new, the ones about BDSM are newer. In high school or college I wasn't on that train of thought. I see a picture it sets me off. A see an attractive women it sets me off. The jiggle of a full ass or heavy breasts, get me going. Yeah, my mind always is on a beautiful face or body.

Rival (Fall Away #2) by Penelope Douglas @PenDouglas

4.5 Stars

ARC received from author in exchange for an honest review

When I first read Bully, I became enamored with Penelope Douglas’ writing style. She eloquently pens romantic stories about troubled teenagers who struggle with sorrow, betrayals, forgiveness and love. What impressed me the most was the way Douglas masterfully presents her characters’ development and dialogue on a mature level.  Although the stories are about teens, I sense nothing immature about them or their life experiences. This holds true for Madoc and Fallon’s love/hate illicit drama in Rival.

Madoc and his stepsister, Fallon, have a unique connection. Forced to live together, they despise and taunt one another. Yet, powerful feelings and sexual urges draw them into an unthinkable relationship. Even though their affair is considered ‘taboo’, I was not put off by their intimacy. They were just two lost souls living with unpleasant circumstances, seeking comfort from one another. It all comes to a painful end when they are discovered. Horrible parents conjure lies and Fallon is quickly shipped off to boarding school, causing both sorrow and distress. For two years, Fallon’s heartache festered leading her to design a plan of revenge against the center of her anguish  – Madoc.

Madoc also has his demons to contend with, believing a cold-hearted Fallon abandoned him. I was saddened by how these characters suffered emotionally and felt both were justified in their agony.

When Fallon returns, dark secrets see the light of day and misunderstandings are revealed, leaving Fallon and Madoc to help heal one another. Their journey, filled with both pain and pleasure, was captivating. I savored each heart clenching moment. Lust and desire, fueled by anger, lies and treacheries, made for some sizzling intense love scenes. Their chemistry was off the charts HOT.

Fallon was difficult at times for me to connect with. I felt as if I was dealing with a split personality. On one hand, she is this tough, tattooed and pierced brazen girl with tomboyish traits. I could not grasp the rebellious Fallon. On the flip side, she was vulnerable, sincere and tender - a total contradiction. It is her sensitive side I liked. Fallon’s character suffered deep pain and I felt great sympathy for all of her misfortunes.  All in all, she made an interesting female lead.

Madoc was maddening – but in a good way. When I first met him in Bully, I disliked him, but gradually come to find I adored his endearing side. In Rival, I found myself despising him once again. It frustrated me rediscovering his cold-hearted cruel personality. Then…he revealed his heartaches and I fell back in love with him. It was clever how Douglas scripted his character – evolving from a tough, mean spirited douche to a sweet, affectionate lover. His changed persona added even more angst within the plot. Add to that, his sex appeal, Madoc totally fascinated me.

On a whole, Rival was a great read for me. It had an interesting storyline, passionate love scenes and written in dual points of view – giving a clear insight into the characters mindset. There was, however, some troublesome issues involving Fallon’s bitch of a mother. I found her too treacherous for my liking and her actions were despicable. Aside from that, Rival was an exceptionally written, emotionally driven romance. Looking forward to the next installment in the series – Falling Away – Jaxon’s story.
