The poignant and angst-filled ending of Feather and Flame had me on pins and needles, highly concerned and fretting over Darius' courageous actions. No spoilers here, but my goodness, his character embodied everything I look for in a true HERO - love, bravery, and devotion. I wanted to wrap my arms around him, keep him safe and all to myself, as I patiently waited for the next installment. In Wishes & Wings, Lane captivated me as the love story between Darius and Nell continued, depicting the challenges and perils this couple faced separate and together. Once again, this author penned an intense and edgy novel, and I enjoyed every passion-filled moment of this saga. This conclusion to the Birdsong Trilogy was pure brilliance.

Didn't think it was possible, but I fell deeper for Darius. I admired the courage he exemplified. I adored his dedication and protectiveness towards Nell. But mainly, it is because of Nell and their experiences that Darius changed, opened his heart, and totally won me over. She provided him with immeasurable strength and determination, and Darius was genuinely magnificent in the end. And as for Nell, her perpetual resilience, love, perseverance and fortitude truly made this heroine shine. Witnessing both fighting for their love on many fronts, their sacrifices and undying passion overcame me. All this intensity had me on edge for most of this read.

Aside from my boundless admiration for this couple, this novel was brilliantly written. I was utterly entranced with this action-packed storyline brimming with sizzling passion. Once again, Nina Lane took me on a turbulent emotional roller coaster ride, enchanting me with her characters and overwhelming me with her words. TEN STARS for Wishes & Wings, a memorable tale I never wanted to end.

Please note this book is part of a trilogy, and I highly recommend reading these installments in series order.

Though she was born and raised in California, Nina Lane now lives in Wisconsin where the winters are freezing and the cheese is exceptional. Mom to two teenagers and a neurotic dog, she lives in two worlds—one world of laundry, driving, horses, Girl Scouts, and football, and the other of epic romances between hot alpha heroes and the women who bring them to their knees. Nina only cooks when she can’t avoid it (i.e., there are no frozen pizzas left), binge-watches serial TV whenever she can get control of the remote, and checks in about the weather daily with her meteorologist husband. Darius:
"This is why I never contacted you. I still have no control around you. You want me to tell you I haven’t thought of you? That would be a damned lie. Wherever I’ve been, whatever I’ve done, I haven’t stopped thinking of you. You are always there.”

Nell:
Once, I was convinced that my feelings for Darius, my love for him, were pure and real. I fought against all his perceptions of wrongness.

But that was four years ago. If I still can’t find pleasure in even the thought of kissing another man, maybe my feelings for Darius have gotten twisted and warped. Maybe they’re obsessive.

Maybe they’re wrong.

Feather and Flame  was the most action-packed, nail-biting, sitting on the edge of my seat novel Nina Lane has ever written, and I relished every tense and passionate moment.

That WOW ending of Hawke and Sparrow left us hanging with Darius Hawke blowing my mind and sending my head spinning. However, the ending also had me curious and anxious to immediately jump in and read Feather and Flame.

Note there is a time jump in this installment. Four long years have passed, and both main characters changed during their separation. (I was delighted and relieved for it as there was a sizeable age difference, and I felt more comfortable with Nell being in her twenties). During their time apart, Nell has grown into a lovely and savvy woman, living in New York City, ready to start her career, while Darius continued his travels as a photojournalist. Circumstances have these two crossing paths, and Darius becomes drawn to her when Nell embarks on a new and exciting internship.

In this installment, we see the true beginnings of their beautiful relationship as a couple and how they were destined to find true love. The chemistry between these two certainly ignited. All the passion and pent-up tension which consumed them finally unleashed and exploded. It was incredibly romantic! Feelings could no longer be ignored or denied, and I adored them together - each providing the other with immeasurable love, tenderness, guidance and strength.

I loved seeing how both main characters grew and evolved. Nell came into her own as a sophisticated and exemplary young woman. She matured significantly and became more tenacious and courageous. I admired all of her grit and determination. Nell had a strong backbone but a loving heart, especially when it came to Darius.

Darius pulled on my heartstrings as his character suffered greatly in the past, and without giving any spoilers, it affected him in many ways. But thanks to Nell, he found the strength to persevere. It was his moment of triumph. Darius gloriously opened up tremendously after surrendering to his heart's desires. As the secrets of his past began to unravel, I fell deeper in love with him. I do feel there's more of him to discover; he's such a fascinating and multi-faceted character. He's a true hero to me in every sense of the word - overly passionate, fiercely protective, and self-sacrificing - all for the woman he loves. Darius came a long way, and holy moly, what he pulled off towards the end had my head spinning (AGAIN) and longing for the last installment.

There's so much going on that each turn of the page was heart-stopping exciting. And a new cast of characters introduced, some I despised, but most I've come to adore, especially Alexi, Sofia and the twins - they hold a special place in my heart.

Five magnificent stars!! Nina Lane has outdone herself in book two, and I can't wait to see how this all turns out in the finale, Wishes & Wings!!

Please note this book is part of a trilogy, and I highly recommend reading these installments in series order.

Darius:
My attraction to her is wrong. I’m like the serpent in the Garden of Eden targeting Eve. Corrupting her.

I understand the serpent, though. When you’ve seen the worst of humanity, taken the brunt of evil, you crave purity and goodness. You want compassion and courage, even when it comes in a girl far too young and innocent for the likes of you.

Nell:
He says I’m too young and he’s too experienced.
He thinks I’m pure and he’s ruined.
He swears I don’t know enough and he knows too much.
He walks away because I’m fragile and he’s broken.

I want him, even though he can’t want me...
But he does.

EXCERPT

The bathroom door clicks open.
With a start, I turn.
He’s paused in the doorway, wearing a pair of loose flannel pants and white T-shirt that clings to his shower-damp torso. A towel is looped around the back of his neck, and his hair is so wet it glistens.
My gaze locks on his chest, the landscape of hard slopes and ridges visible through the thin cotton. Water drips from his hair to his throat and cascades downward in little waterfalls. I have a sudden urge to become one of those droplets, winding my way over his body.
A hot glow fires in a deep, secret part of myself.
Tightening my grip on my bag, I indicate the stairs. “I’ll…um, wait in the kitchen.”
“I’ll just be a few minutes.”
I hurry downstairs. My nerves are like little electrical wires. Part of me is aware that this new level of noticing Darius isn’t right.
But why does it feel so…momentous?
I imagine this is what a bird feels like right before flying for the first time—nervous, excited, and trembling in anticipation of the wild, exhilarating leap into the sky.

Nina Lane never ceases to amaze me with her remarkable and memorable love stories. Time and time again, her eloquently written tales touch the very heart of me. I'm always excited to jump into one of Lane's romances, where I can get lost within the descriptive worlds she creates, and I was thrilled to hear that there was a new release underway.

Sparrow & Hawke, book one in the Birdsong Trilogy, was an incredible story. However, this series presented a challenge for me as a reader and long-time fan of Nina's work. Large age-gap romances are not my preference and something I usually avoid. So naturally, I was uncertain if this novel would be to my liking, being there were twenty years between the two main characters. Placing a lot of trust in Lane's hands, I dove into this novel, hoping that I would and could appreciate Darius and Nell's journey. In the end, I was overcome with joy that I took this leap of faith. Emotionally gripping and angst-filled, I relished every moment of this read, as it was an excellent start to what will be a great series.

Firstly, I like to say that this is a forbidden romance that fans of the taboo genre will definitely love. Not only is our hero, Darius, considerably older than Nell, he is also her father's best friend and her late mother's step-brother. Secondly, and most importantly to me, this installment is a slow burn. Nell and Darius have plenty of passion, but here we see the dynamics of their relationship blossom into something new. I loved seeing that their sizzling chemistry was emotionally driven rather than overly physical.

Throughout this read, Nell Fairchild struggled significantly to discover herself. She was an introverted and troubled teenager purposefully sheltered from the outside world by her worrisome father, Henry. As a child, Nell was subjected to her mother's unbalanced and irrational behavior. The instability she experienced throughout her younger years, along with her mother's subsequent death, had a detrimental effect on Nell, scarring her emotionally. Because of these circumstances, she lived in isolation but grew and changed since Darius's reappearance into her life. I loved seeing how her relationship with Darius was the catalyst to Nell's transformation into a strong-willed, intelligent and mature woman. Her character embodied a tremendous amount of strength and beauty.

Darius Hawke was a complicated and flawed hero who quickly earned my affections. A sexy field photographer turned high school teacher with a traumatic past, he was dark, broody, and reserved while hiding a multitude of secrets waiting to be unraveled. Darius was so shattered and overly distraught that I wanted to soothe and mend his ravaged spirit. Not giving away too much about the hell he had endured, Darius had many challenges of his own to overcome. And much to his surprise and against his better judgment, it is Nell who gives him the strength to persevere.

Five plus stars for Nina Lane's Sparrow & Hawke! The first in the Birdsong series, where we witness the beginnings of a beautiful relationship and this couple's strong connection. A poignant and riveting tale of two broken survivors haunted by demons from their past, and there are so many challenges they have yet to overcome as their journey continues in Feather & Flame.
